China-Nepal Joint Experiment of RETROFIT Project supported by ICCR-DRR

China-Nepal joint experiment of retrofit project was held successfully at Kunming, Yunnan Province on 21-22 January 2017. The Retrofit project was sponsored by ICCR-DRR and has developed a series of practical techniques that have been validated in a number of wall push-over and scaled model shaking-table tests to provide best practical retrofitting schemes that can be easily learned and shared by local masons and engineers.

On 21-22 January 2017, China-Nepal joint experiment of retrofit project was held successfully at Kunming, Yunnan Province.  The project team presented the shake-table testing of a two-story stone masonry house that follows the common practice of construction in mountainous areas of Nepal. The test is to simulate the dynamic response and failure mode of two different techniques retrofitted house under various seismic scenarios.

The retrofit project was sponsored by ICCR-DRR, brings together the researchers, engineers and professionals from China, Nepal, Bangladesh and UK to develop better-built and retrofitting techniques for the stone masonry houses according to the principle of “effective, locally affordable and easy-to-implement”. This RETROFIT project aims to contribute to the post-disaster reconstruction of Nepal and fulfill the concept of “Build Back Better”. This project has developed a series of practical techniques that have been validated in a number of wall push-over and scaled model shaking-table tests, and expects to provide best practical retrofitting schemes that can be easily learned and shared by local masons and engineers.
